Aircraft take a long time from the drawing board to their first flight and into airline service. The BAe146 airliner took 21 years. Why does this small regional airliner have four engines and what is the connection with Germany's WW2 jet fighter, the Messerschmitt 262?
Two 146s were evaluated for their suitability to replace the RAF Andovers of The Queens Flight and ultimately the aircraft became a popular regional airliner, especially in the USA, leading to nearly 400 builds. However, there were many bumps along the way and although its successor was abandoned the type lives on in new roles.
