Peter Keat returns with an industrial journey “Along the Portsmouth Direct"
Peter gave a photo survey of the areas around the railway route. Initially taking in the Isle of Wight we looked at the line, raised on piles round the Portsmouth Harbour station and Naval Base, which led inland as far as Petersfield. Along the way are the MOD Railways, Portsmouth Brickworks and Gas Works. Lines deviated in several directions, to the docks, ferries etc.
He moved on then to Fratton with its huge yards in the War period, with engine sheds and station.
There was a brief look at the Army connection at Hilsea and the airfield on the other side of the line.
Passing through Farlington we looked at the Racecourse, the Nature Reserve, Horse Hospital and the famous Starfish Project (a WWII decoy project burning bins of oil, to distract bombers heading for the docks.)
Time permitted just a mention of the Hayling Island line, the site of the Battle of Havant and Rowlands Castle then onward through the tunnel to Petersfield. (Perhaps this section could be covered in more detail at another time?)
Club outings in July and August - some idea of likely numbers needed soon - come prepared!
