Peter Keat returns with an industrial
journey “Along the Portsmouth Direct"
Peter gave a photo survey
of the areas around the railway route. Initially taking in the Isle of Wight we
looked at the line, raised on piles round the Portsmouth Harbour station and Naval Base, which led
inland as far as Petersfield. Along the way are the MOD Railways, Portsmouth
Brickworks and Gas Works. Lines deviated in several directions, to the docks,
He moved on then to Fratton with its huge yards in the War period,
with engine sheds and station.
There was a brief look at the Army connection at Hilsea
and the airfield on the other side of the line.
Passing through Farlington
we looked at the
Racecourse, the Nature Reserve, Horse Hospital and the famous Starfish Project
(a WWII decoy project burning bins of oil, to distract bombers heading for the

mention of the Hayling
Island line, the site of the Battle of Havant and Rowlands Castle then onward through the tunnel to Petersfield. (Perhaps this section could be covered in more
detail at another time?)
