“Railways of Hampshire”
a talkby Stephen Bigley
Hampshire rails go backnearly 180
years – originally as a spur to the development of Southampton Docks and
evolving over time. In particular, container traffic is still the focus for
freight train activity in Hampshire. We saw container
trains but also other freight such as stone, as well as passenger trains, both by
day and by night. In addition we saw the other things that
make up the “Railway” – bridges, signals, stations and track along with remains
and reminders of long lost lines.
Stephen took us on a fascinating journey, a mix of modern and historic sights, showing the developments over a lifetime, with intriguing shots of relics of railway infrastructure that still survive.
