John Hollands on "Frank Hornby – The man who made Meccano - His
Life and Work"
This was an overall look at his life and career,
including the invention of Meccano, the
development of the Meccano factory, the Meccano Magazine, and the introduction
of Hornby Trains and Dinky Toys. His family life, and his many interests
outside the Meccano factory were also covered. John managed to present Hornby
as a personality, with a very committed outlook for the highest standards in presenting opportunity for young people, initially as engineering projects for boys. It was reassuring to be told that the first electric Hornby trains which operated from the mains supply were quickly redesigned for low-voltage DC operation, no doubt saving many young lives in the process! Hornby became a millionaire with the success of his products, but always kept a keen interest in the firm, and showed a paternal concern for his staff. In his final years he served as an MP for his area.
John also mounted a fascinating display of Hornby tinplate trains track and buildings, with examples of books and Meccano magazines.
